Culture Watch

Part of the Emerging Church conversation is looking at how we as Christians can meet people where they are at. This means learning the culture we are in today, while not always ascribing to it, but allowing it to lead us to reach out to people who might not ever step foot in a church building.

As we look at culture, we look at ways people express themselves and how that can be used in worshipping God. Art can be used in various forms during worship. This art can be found in different styles depending on the people involved. It may be in the form of movie clips or paintings.

Prayer flags give people the option of writing prayers on a piece of cloth during worship. These prayer flags can be taken by an individual or small group throughout the week to pray over.

Part of the Emerging Church conversation is removing the sacred/secular divide in our daily lives. We are surrounded by our culture and learning how to remove this divide can help us live our Christian lives each day rather than just when we go to church on Sundays.

There are various ways to break down the sacred/secular divide. The U2Charist is a worship setting that uses the music of U2 in praising God. Many Emerging Cohort groups meet in coffee shops and other public places so that anyone can participate in the discussion.

This page will give references to different art forms that can be used in worship and/or discussions about faith.
