Dear Kathy,
Thanks for your encouragement. I believe that Lutheran theology has this to offer: a relationship with Jesus that is humbly certain that all paradox, ambiguity, and fear are within the Realm. That is to say, we have a narrative (even a metanarrative) that assumes its own limitations (even welcomes them).

One thing emerging church forces us to do is examine our Lutheran theology in depth. I enjoy the “theological” tenor of these posts very much.It is all the more vital, I think, to engage others (even people who worship a “fixer from the throne!”) in a humble fashion. Because of the predominant weariness with metanarratives which purport to offer the Truth of Everything, we need to be “assertively humble” i.e. we offer our ideas, our truth, in the marketplace of ideas without presumption of privilege. I must confess I long sometimes for the certainty of Enlightenment thought which I find cogent, pellucid and accessible. While our tension-filled, ambiguous theology better reflects the empirical data (at least “empirical” as seen through our particular cultural linguistic matrix) available to us, I think we need to recognize the pernicious hold “black and white” theology has on some people. I see our church helping most at the point where this theology breaks down, as it often does in the face of great tragedy. People caught up in the brokenness and ugliness of life are often ready to ask the big questions. That’s where we come in, with a humble offer of our truth. It’s less “here I stand” these days than “here I kneel.” I applaud you all for grappling with the postmodern zeitgeist. I try to do the same in my congregation and community. It’s wonderful to know there is good Lutheran company available.Kathy
